Athens Stargazing Experience: Family Night Tours at the National Observatory
Experience the magic of the night sky in Athens. Visit the Geoastrophysics Museum, view stars through a telescope & more. Family-friendly tours from May all summer long!
From May and throughout the entire summer season, the Hill of the Nymphs transforms into an open window to the universe. The “Evenings Under the Stars” take place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the Thiseio Visitor Centre of the National Observatory of Athens, offering the public a rare opportunity for a family encounter with science and history.
Children aged 6 and above are welcome to join the public evening tour at the Thiseio Visitor Centre. Children under this age are not charged an admission fee; however, their guardians/accompanying adults should be aware of the above age guideline upon entry. “Evenings Under the Stars” include:
- A visit to the Museum of GeoAstrophysics
- An introduction to the historic Syngros Meridian Telescope
- Sky observation with a portable telescope in the outdoor area, weather permitting
The importance of exploration in childhood
During early school age (6–9 years old), children begin to think more logically and seek answers that bridge their imagination with reality. This is the period when curiosity about the world around them becomes their ticket to life’s great journey.
An encounter with the Observatory strengthens the joy of learning and spontaneous curiosity. It provides stimulation for philosophical dialogue between parents and children — essential for their emotional development — while creating shared family experiences away from screens, which so often monopolize children’s time.
