Tucked away at the foot of Mount Hymettus, just a stone’s throw from the Athenian Riviera, lies one of Greece’s most enchanting natural wonders — Lake Vouliagmeni. How Did This Lake Come to Be?
Here’s where things get interesting. Around 2,000 years ago, the roof of a massive underground cave simply collapsed — carved out over millennia by erosion and tectonic shifts — and Lake Vouliagmeni was born. The lake sits in a beautiful elliptical hollow, stretching 260 meters long and 145 meters wide, perched just half a metre above sea level. Beneath the surface, an intricate network of 14 underwater tunnels winds its way through ancient limestone rock, stretching an explored length of over 3,100 meters and eventually connecting with the sea.

What makes Lake Vouliagmeni truly special is its water. Fed by springs from 50 to 100 meters underground, the lake maintains a wonderfully warm temperature year-round — between 21°C and 29°C — thanks to its deep connection with the Aegean’s volcanic arc. A freshwater spring at 17 metres depth adds to this unique natural cocktail.
The water itself is packed with minerals and trace elements — potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, iron, iodine and more — making it renowned for its therapeutic benefits. Locals and visitors alike swear by it for:
